Genesis 35:10

This website has been moved to:

Genesis 35:10: And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; your name shall not be called Jacob anymore, but Israel shall be your name.” So He called his name Israel.

Genesis 46:2: Then God spoke to Israel in the visions of the night, and said, “Jacob, Jacob!” And he said, “Here I am.”

Genesis 35 says that after Jacob's name changed he would never again be called Jacob, but Genesis 46 says that God called Jacob by this name at a later time.

The verse from Genesis 35 is being taken far too literally. The most likely meaning of the phrase 'your name shall not be called Jacob anymore' does not contradict there being an exception later on.
