Mark 6:52

Mark 6:52: For they had not understood about the loaves, because their heart was hardened.

John 6:14-15: Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

Mark says that the people didn't understand the feeding of the multitude, but John says that the people tried to make Him king.

A group which didn't understand the feeding of the multitude would not have tried to make Him king.

You can know that something amazing happened without understanding its full workings or implications.

The phrase 'they had not understood about the loaves' is ambiguous and is not incompatible with their trying to make Jesus king.
