Nehemiah 7:8-62: the sons of Parosh, two thousand one hundred and seventy-two; the sons of Shephatiah, three hundred and seventy-two; […] And these were the ones who came up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer, but they could not identify their father’s house nor their lineage, whether they were of Israel: the sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda, six hundred and forty-two;

Nehemiah 7 gives a list of people amounting to 31,089, but Nehemiah 7 also says that the total population was 42,360.

There were family lines within Israel which had no genealogy recorded, but were still a part of the total number at the end of 42,360. Here's a possible example from Nehemiah 7:64: "These sought their listing among those who were registered by genealogy, but it was not found; therefore they were excluded from the priesthood as defiled."
